February is unanimously the month of love to celebrate romantic love and sisterly love. I figure that’s why I went a reviewing spree on Netgalley. So I picked up three upcoming titles from the My Heart Belongs Series by Barbour Books that will be published in 2018. The 10 book catalogue will encompass books set in the between 1776-1940 favouring the 19th century across different locations in the US.

Title:  My Heart Belongs in Niagara Falls, New York: Adele’s Journey

Author: Amanda Barratt

Publication Date:  January 1, 2018

Adele travels to America with only one goal in mind: to get herself a husband. A rich husband. Despite all her efforts in keeping her family’s estate afloat, she still needs a significant amount of money to get debtors off their backs. Her good-for-nothing brother does not help. She travels to Niagara Falls with the hope that she will be able to charm a generous American tycoon, who will love her enough to alleviate her family’s problems. Life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Drew… Drew is caught between a rock and a hard place, being a tightrope walker is the only means of survival for himself and his paralyzed sister. But his world shifts when he meets Adele a beautiful foreign socialite and he knows that he might have to make some drastic decisions in order to woo him.

The author did a good job of creating the atmosphere and I was transported back to 1880s. I could empathize with Adele’s predicament especially at a time in history when women’s choices were limited and yet some were faced with huge family responsibilities. However, at some point, I found myself not caring for some of the characters as much as I thought I would. But that may have been due to my own external circumstances that kept on distracting me from the book.

Nonetheless, I  appreciated some of the quotable quotes that were sprinkled within the book like this one:

…God doesn’t want us to float languidly through life, not working or doing a thing to change our lot. But ultimately, He is our help and our only hope is in Him…

Overall, I am glad that I took my time to read this book because I got to know more about the Niagara Falls and New York. My knowledge of New York was limited to the city and not the state. I had only heard about the waterfalls from the Canadian side and funambulists but never from the American side. I will definitely have my eye out for more of Ms Barratt’s work.
