A dream is a wish that your heart makes
When you’re fast asleep
In dreams, you lose all heartache
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
your rainbow will come smiling through
And no matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
The dreams that you wish will come true….
I have a confession to make: I grew up watching Walt Disney fairytale classics. So, when recently a friend of mine called me a dreamer, the first song that came to mind was one of the scores in Cinderella. I remember Cinderella telling her mice friends that her family (read ugly step mother and step sisters) could order her around but they could not her to stop dreaming. If we did not have dreams, aspirations and goals, where would we be?
Recently, I read John C. Maxwell’s Thinking For A Change and I must admit, for a self-help book, it is a great read. In terms of thinking, he challenged me to throw away the proverbial box! He encourages readers to think about their dreams and things that give them the most joy. Please do not forget that by constantly meditating on these things, one strategizes how to make his/her lofty ideas more concrete.
The song says that I should have faith and believe that my dreams will come true in a rather ambiguous manner. I guess the writers wanted to remain politically correct. I, on the other hand want to make it crystal clear- I have faith and believe in God. I love Acts 17: 28 where Paul says “in Him we live and move and have our being”. Paul had gone to Areopagus and found Athenians placing the sacrifices on an altar dedicated to “THE UNKNOWN GOD”. Shocked, he sought to dispel the notion that God was impersonal and uninterested in them. Long story short, his thoughts were not readily accepted. He leftAthensbut not without getting at least two converts: Damaris and Dionysius the Areopagite.
Truth be told, not every one will buy into your dream. Most people will think es muy loca! (Spanish: she’s very crazy). On the flipside, how many people have been deemed crazy or foolish through the ages and later on heralded as absolute geniuses…. There’s nothing as embarrassing as someone accomplishing something that you written off as impossible.
Well, Cinderella had her mousy friends to help all the while (just between us, she was rather melancholic). They were constantly coming up with plans to help her put her wardrobe, get passed that wretched cat and get a hold of the precious glass slipper.I guess that’s why it’s a fairytale- no friendly mice, no fairy godmothers. However, I must say, that she who finds a true friend finds a good thing. Further, I just have to be self-sufficient and hustle until my dreams come true.
In the same way, I believe that God is interested in my life and my dreams. In fact, he has ordained them. So I just have to keep dreaming (and acting), trust God and His timing. I would like to end this piece with a few words from Brandon Heath’s Light In Me:
The shot to the heart
You are the hope that leads me
Out of the dark
You let Your love shine down
So that the world can see
You put the light in me.
